Roddy Cons

Real Sociedad v Sturm Graz – UEFA Europa League – post-match interviews with Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil and midfielder Martín Zubimendi

Both interviews were originally posted in Spanish on Real Sociedad TV (on YouTube).

Missed chances

Alguacil: “That’s football. You can create so many chances in so many different ways – through the middle, out wide, getting to the byline, cutbacks, crosses, shots saved or blocked in front of goal – but when it doesn’t want to go in, it doesn’t want to go in. But I’m encouraged by the way the team played, the way we pushed, kept calm, were patient and did the right things. We’re on the right track. I said to the guys that if we can play the way we did today, I’m absolutely certain that we’ll finish top of the group. But we need to do it.”

Zubimendi: “We only drew today but it feels totally different to the draw the other day (against Athletic Club). I think we were brave on the ball, especially when playing out from the back and we got into the final third so many times. We tried lots of crosses…everything, but our clearest chances were saved and it wasn’t to be.”

“It’s important to score early and score first against this type of opponent. I think that hampered us throughout the game. I think we responded well in the second half and I honestly thought we’d go on to win but the keeper saved one, there was an offside…it wasn’t to be. But we have to be proud of ourselves and we need to keep going.”

Qualification for the knockout stages going down to the final group game?

Alguacil: “That’s the way it was last year and that’s the way it’ll be this year. But the way the team is playing tells me that we’re capable of winning the last two games. Even though we’re really frustrated, the team are united, it’s another game unbeaten, we’re creating lots and playing really well. That’s the objective, it’s clear. The team know exactly what they have to do and they’re going to do it.”

Zubimendi: “We’re used to it, whether it’s in the Europa League or in the league just to get into the Europa League. Everything is decided at the last moment. I think it’s in our own hands. If we play like that I think we can do it. We’ve already had two draws against them (PSV and Monaco), we respect them but we don’t fear them. We’re going to go all out to win.”
